Aquafresh has insured Ugly Betty star America Ferrera's smile for $10M (GBP5M) through an Lloyd's of London policy.
And why, you might ask, would an American toothpaste manufacturer take out a ridiculously large policy on a TV actress' pearly whites?
Because they're trying to zap up some publicity for their participation in the Smiles for Success program, a charity that helps women making the transition between getting off the dole and into the workforce.
And, since Ugly Betty continues to pull in the viewers -- it's still one of the most-watched scripted shows on U.S. television -- a lot of people know exactly who America Ferrera is.
We're not sure that her character, who wears braces, is necessarily the best advertisement for great teeth, but maybe there's just some subtle humor there that's so subtle it's undetectable. However. In the interest of spotlighting a semi-sensible cause...
The Smiles for Success program plans to cover part of the cost for dental care for women trying to get off welfare. Aquafresh claims they will donate $1 to Smiles for Success for each box of Aquafresh White Trays purchased between now and August 31.
