Laura Dern accepted movie role for sentimental reason

Tough chick actress Laura Dern has a soft side -- she says she accepted her latest film role, because the character hit really close to home.

The actress is a dog lover, and the script for Year of The Dog arrived at her house just a day after she had to put her own pooch to sleep.

Since the film was about a secretary's attempts to get over her beloved pet's death, the script immediately interested Laura, who was going through the same thing.

She says that filming the movie over the course of a few months was actually good therapy.

Says Laura: "I was sent the script the day after I put my dog to sleep. If I had to serve coffee on the set, there was no way I was saying no to this movie. You're just broken and devastated when your dog dies and you feel like the rest of the world can never relate, but most of us have had the experience of the loss of an animal...It affected me deeply."

Briefly interrupting this story to have a Frivolous People Preachy McPreachy note, here's a link to the ASPCA for anyone interested in adopting from a shelter.

Also, please ID/tag and spay your pets, to keep them safe and control overpopulation -- or there'll just be more pets in shelters without a home. Okay, public service message over.

And here we have the trailer and a clip from the new flick, Year of the Dog, for animal lovers and big softies:
